\/ / /\ – FIN

Hey everyone! Many apologies that I have not been around to give you guys any updates lately. A lot of things have been going on, final submissions for academics, finalizing art portfolios, etc, etc.

But now I’m back!

It’s been a tough and arduous journey going through these past two or so years, particularly for art. I have had a lot of ups and down, dry spells for art which is the last thing you would ever want when you know that you have to submit a decent portfolio in less that half a year’s time. But nevertheless, it is all finished and I am happy to say that I have ended these section of my artistic journey on a high! I am proud to announce that all my friends in the same cohort are equally happy to share that they all think the same. So, on behalf of the graduating visual arts cohort of 2012, I present to you all:

SOTA Graduating Cohort Exhibition 2012

As always, it is being held at School Of The Arts, SIngapore Art Gallery (level 2) and will be running for one entire month! The longest exhibition held since the opening of the school! It features selected works of all the pioneer students of SOTA that have been completed over the past two years, many of which are clear testimonies to our growth and development not only as students, but growing artists in this developing artistic community. Works are from all media – drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, design and new media – mostly of a contemporary nature with each student boasting 2 to 5 of their best pieces.

Concepts of the works delve into the exploration of identity through artistic experimentation, questioning, exploring and challenging artistic technique and conceptual development, exploration and tribute to the intangible and overlooked elements of space and the mundane, essence and appreciation of joy, etc. But all these descriptions are mere shadows in an attempt to capture the works that are on display and only when you view the exhibition can you truly appreciate the hard work and beauty that has gone into these masterpieces.

Over the next week or so, I will be posting pictures of some of the many works that are on display there. Hopefully, you all will be able to give some constructive criticism, compliments, etc. so as to starts all of us on the next leg of our artistic journey.

Drawing Out

An exhibition that opened just yesterday at the School Of The Arts, Singapore Level 2 art gallery! This exhibition features works from the newly arrived year three cohort of 2012. A great way to start out their artistic education and possible future career in the arts!

Write up (taken from SOTA website):

The showcase will feature the explorations and developments of our youngest visual arts students at the School of the Arts. During their first two years, they are taught the basic techniques of the various art forms; drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics. In addition to simply showcasing their varied approaches to art-making, this exhibition is also giving these young students a unique opportunity to reach a wider audience for the first time. We are proud to present you the creations of their first phase at SOTA.

i Light Marina Bay

I am glad to say that I have been given the opportunity to display my work in this national exhibition. I will be representing my school, School Of The Arts, Singapore, in this public exhibition. Set up will commence at the start of the week and end, hopeful, by Wednesday. My work is marked as number 3 on the map, and it will be displayed at The Promontory itself. Just before the opening of the exhibition I shall be posting some of the pictures and the ideas that has led me to do this work.

I really have got to thank all my teachers who have helped me, seeing me and the project through till completion. Without them, I would not even have this opportunity and the ability to finish my work. Thank you once again!

I hope to see you readers there! Do drop by if you are in the area!

i Light Marina Bay

Singapore is holding its second i Light festival in Marina Bay! It will be from the 9 March 2012 to 1 April 2012, from 7:30pm to 11pm. Artworks will be displayed along Marina Bay waterfront, with the theme of “Light Meets Asia”. It will feature over 30 sustainable light pieces by artist from all walks of life, but with its focus in Asia.

There will be many individual and group arts works, including Singapore’s Vertical Submarine.

The organizers have also given two spaces to Singapore’s two prominent art schools – Laselle College of the Arts and School of the Arts Singapore. These spaces will be host to interactive works, promoting the use of efficient and sustainable light, and visitors are encouraged to interact and experience the “talent of Singapore’s aspiring artist”.

More details can be found on the official website:

As it comes closer to the date, I will be putting up more details of the works and the event calendar.

Hope to see you guys there!!!

Harumika

This has been long overdue – the Harumika Design Exhibition 2009, 3 pieces that represented my group from SOTA.

These are the entries that my group submitted. Unfortunately, the last piece that had a “string/netting fabric” was not found on the day of the exhibition and thus not exhibited.

The first is a simple experimental dress design that was made using masking tape and newsprint. The masking tape was torn into narrow strips, creased and places in a spiral for the skirt of the dress. The top on the other hand, is made of “origami” newsprint, simple folding of pieces of newsprint into “geometrical patterns”.

The second is the one that was finally exhibited in the design exhibition. Instead of using the newsprint, my group decided on using the creased masking tape as the main material and design of the entire dress. The black and gold highlights brought out the elegance in the dress, giving it a more clash sophisticated feel.

The next also shows a dress made out of netting and pipe tape (used to seal leaking taps and pipes). The top is the purely made of the tape to make a strapped top, and the skirt is made out of the netting into a flared skirt. This overall is more like a playful sundress like piece.

Last but not least, the piece that I made personally, is a piece made out of an “origami skirt much like the first one, and a “glue-gun lined overdress”. It is a simpler, more playful dress, with slight highlights of black on the hem of the dress.

Space: Inescapable

This word could possibly be a foreword to my works that I shall be posting regarding the concept of “Space”. Now this is not space as in “Universe” Space, but rather all of the “emptiness” that we are surrounded by every single day that we often neglect. These works that are to follow will be more philosophical, tackling a rather huge concept that is hard to grasp, but something that we have to eventually as it is inescapable.
